A new beginning

I just had my lapband surgery this week, and although I am still sore, I am looking forward to the new beginning it offers me. The women in my family have all been obese, so being heavy seemed like my lot in life. I also cook for a living, which hasn't helped my efforts in dieting and exercise programs. Sure, I'd loose a little and then gain it back with reinforcements. I teach students about nutrition, and have often wondered if they are wondering why I didn't practice what I preached. I usually ended my talks by saying,"if you don't take the time to take care of yourself, you could look like me later". My son's mother-in-law suffered from obesity, however, she had the gastric bypass surgery and lost 100 lbs in less than a year. I guess the tell-tale moment came when my grandson asked me if I ever considered having the surgery that his other grandma had. I went home and cried for two days. Knowing he was right, though, and I needed to do something about my obesity, I started looking for alternatives. Fortunately for me, I had a hernia operation and was joking around with my Dr. about sucking out fat cells during the procedure. After the surgery, I kidded him by telling him how disappointed I was that he didn't do his part to reduce my obesity. At that time, he told me that if I was serious, that one of his partners was just becoming certified to do the lapbad surgery. I made the appointment to visit with the Dr. the next day. I was in Dr. Ballero's office two or three times a week, trying to hustle him into doing my surgery. It took 3 months before he could do it, for one reason or another. Finally, a week before Christmas, it's done. I know its going to be the best Christmas present I've ever received. Who would have thought it...a new lease on life at 60?
